Is Occam's razor a good way of finding the truth?

I was raised a very devout Catholic, but I've become an agnostic. And I've found that, in trying to become a Christian again, I've tried to find the most stripped-down, basic way of believing in God, since that way I don't have to believe in all that sacramental magic BS. Yet I consistently find that I can never strip Deism down enough to fit within a rational world view/ system of inquiry. Anyone else having the same difficulty?
