How do I change the properties of a file?

I've uploaded some videos from my digital camera onto my computer and I want to edit them on Windows Movie Maker, but it doesn't support the file type. Is there any way that I can change the file type so it is compatible? The file is .MOV, can I change it to.WMA or something else compatible?
