Last name origin question?

My guess would be that your family immigrated to the United states from Germany. Or Austria or Switzerland. Bamberg is actually the name of a city. "Bamberger" would actually be what you would say in German to describe someone as "having come from Bamberg". You might say.."Er ist Bamberger." or "He is a citizen of Bamberg". Many Ashkenazic Jews came over from Germany to the United states at the time of the immigration influx. Originally, Jews in western Europe took on the name of the cities that they lived in, in order to hide their ancestry, so that their names sounded more like their fellow German speaking citizens. As a matter of fact, Yiddish, is a Jewish dialect of German. Many Jews were mistreated in Europe because of their religion and often lived in Jewish slums. This is typical of Ashkenazic Jews living in both western and eastern Europe. That's why many Jews in the United states carry Germanic and Slavic last names.
